Wayne's Visit

Wayne’s were here for a short visit. It was a break for from their drive from Anaheim to Santa Maria. Wayne, Matthew, Susan, friend Adrian and I visited and walked and rode the Segway to the nearby Douglas Park. It is good to have company. Matthew was going to get some experience with freeway driving on the way home.

Birthdays

Monday is Joan’s birthday. Amber will have her 3rd birthday on March 2 and Aidan’s 1st on March 5. The birthdays all are close together and the family will have a celebratory week. This is their 1st week in their new home.

Wayne’s will be going to Disney Land tomorrow for a day visit They may have time for a visit here. It would be good to have them as my 1st visitors.

hEyes

A week ago Dr. Kaba did a procedure on my eye with the age related macular degeneration. He expressed that the procedure was to stop the deterioration of the trouble. The Web Site telling of the procedure mentioned that some participants might see some improvement in their eyesight. I am one of the one that are seeing an improvement, better peripheral vision, a bit more light getting through and the objects are larger. I will see the ophthomaologist at Kaiser West Los Angles on March 8th and return visit to Dr. Kaba in three months for more treatment. I am pleased.

Thursday

Tomorrow will be one week since the eye procedure. I will report on my observations about the change in vision.

The rains have ended and it is good to see the Southern California sun again.

Eating Out

With all rain that has been coming down I have been thinking about the area and places that are not to far and not much of a walk, three to five blocks, from here and have been making use of them for my main meal each day. One is the Golden Dragon, not a fancy but good enough Chinese restaurant, another the Casa Escobar a little better than average Mexican place, better because the decor is nice, another the Mayan a small and simple Japanese restaurant with minimum service but good food, the other a typical American that has been well known for many years, Googies. All have a menu where you can be satisfied with meal for under $7.00. With St Johns Medical Center cafeteria and UCLA Medical Center at Santa Monica give me plenty of choices for a meal close to home.

Ran + Sun

There was still a lot of rain yesterday, more than eight inches in the area.. My timing went well as I walked the five blocks to and from St Johns Medical Center and received only a few drops of rain. I am not allowed to be in the sun and did not want the chance of getting wet so walked the two blocks to The Casa Escobar for a Mexican dinner of a beef enchilada, beans and rice served with two dishes of salsa, hot and mild and with a bowl of tortilla chips. It was a good day.

Some people have this day off. Those in hospitals and caregivers do not. Volunteering at St Johns will go on as usual, nice to be retired an unconcerned about days off.
There has been a lot of rain falling. I don’t know the records but feel as if some have been broken. It is to continue until Thursday. No damage that I have heard about for Santa Monica. Lots of rain but it is coming straight down, very heavy at times.

Carl's are happy to be in their new Napa Valley home.

Paul, Leslie and Nickolas are in Hawaii.

Visudyne

Yesterday, the day with appointment with the retinal specialist went well. Got there at 9:30, not to bad an experience, if you like dilated eyes, bright lights of all kinds lights shining in the eyes during the look around and many machines checking different things. The actual surgery was not much. Dr. Kaba let me know that the procedure is intended to slow the destruction of the macular. The description of the procedure on the Internet states that a partial recovery was observed in some patients. www.visudyne.com/hcp/index/jsp. I left about 12:30. It will take a couple of days to know of the results. In the meantime I am to stay completely covered from the sun, a 3rd degree sunburn could result from the dye’s interaction with ultra-red light.

I am a bit late in sending this belog, out early and overlooked it.

Paul will be off on United for 8 days in Hawaii with Leslie and Nicholas, what a nice time they will have. They like the water so much and there are interesting beach combing there. Nicholas is just the right age, all will enjoy.

Carl, Joan, Amber and Aidan will be moving to their new home this weekend. What a hectic time a move can be. They will really like living in a home of their own again after eight years and this will be their third move in Napa. Thing do change and get better.

Tests

It was and interesting day at the Kaiser ophthmologist department at Kaiser Sunset Medical Center. Yesterday. They took a lot of pictures, used a dye inserted into a vein in on back of you hand to show up the leakage in the damaged eye. Friday will be more interesting and expect some positive results from the new procedure.

Eye

Today is the appointment with Pedro to do a florescence (sp) test at Kaiser’s Sunset Medical Center, at least two hours away by three buses. It is not a too an unpleasant and experience. They are looking to see what there is to see inside the left eye so as to know what they will do on Friday with their laser procedure. A Dr. Rosen thought that their would be an improvement in the vision from that eye.

Valentines

Happy Valentines Day!

The closest that I have as a valentine here maybe a couple of companion volunteers at St Johns Medical Center. I have made a few chocolate cover almonds for them. Enjoy this noncommercial holiday celebrating one of the most important feelings between two people.

Radio

Radio is not passé. Last evening I listened to “Praire Home Companion“, two hours. During the week Arthur Miller the playwright died and his play the a ”Crucible”, two more hours was performed on Public Radio, from ten to twelve their normal program the “Play’s The Things” is aired. So that is two plus two plus two for six straight hours. It was an enjoyable evening of six hours of radio listing.

Conscience

A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.

A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

The Body

It is not a surprise that the body does not feel as flexible and comfortable as it did. Age has caused some arthritis to be present and the polimalgia reheumatica has not compley finished its course, projected to be, one to be five years, now in its third year. I have stopped taking prednesone and using Tylenol for pain relief as needed. Still feel and act reasonably well for someone who has been around this long.

Laundry

Since this new location does not have a laundry it is necessary to take my laundry to a laundramat. Yesterday I stuffed it into a backpack and a couple of plastic grocery bags and did it at the condo. Carl is still paying the condo fees until it is sold so there was no reason not to us that facility. I got the items that needed to be folded back into the backpack and the others back into the two plastic bags. The Segway can easily carry me, the handlebar pack, my backpack and two plastic bags. I am surprised at what can be improvised.

New Technic

This afternoon Dr. Rosen the ophthmologist at Kaiser will give me my 1st treatment on the left eye using Macugen the newest and best drug to be injected into the eye to overcome some damaged caused my macular degeneration, AMD. If you are interested go to www.macugen.com for a description and more than you need to know about this drug and procedure. I don’t expect much improvement but maybe some stoppage of further deteriorations.

Anola

Anola called yesterday afternoon. She is recovering from her knee surgery at home, means that she can walk up her stairs. Her leg still needs more movement, which will happen. She can drive her car. She likes to be out and about. She reported that all in the Minnesota family are doing well.

Birthday

Leslie has his birthday next Tuesday. He is doing well and on his own at his home in Cannon Falls. He has had one knee and then the other operated on and is moving and walking well. He was born at home in 1925 in Goodhue Minnesota. All of my seven siblings were born by my mother in her home. What a story she could tell.

Glad to be back on the Internet

The blog is back online and sooner than I had expected it be. Verizon got me up on a dial-up setup until they get the DSL back on line, changing locations must be more complicated than I thought that it would be.

I have been in this new home for a day less than a week. I am about all settled, five boxes yet to empty, everything will fit in someplace. I am pleased with the new place, fits me just right and I have everything that I had at 1440 except the sofa bed, still have some room on the floor for visitors.
